Speech Delay

Speech Delay
speech-delayChildren are born with some ability to communicate. From a very first cry and sounds of a baby to the complex language production, we all have a necessity and desire to communicate with others. For some children the development of speech and language skills may be really difficult process.  It may be also frustrating and difficult for parents, caregivers and adults when child’s communication is late.

There is no certain or set age at which all children should start talking but nearly all children will be talking, using understandable words and sounds to express meanings – by about 18 months of age. Till this time majorities of children make noises and test out sounds while they learn to produce language. This babbling often begins approximately at four months of age.

By the age of two, some children have nearly 200 words at their disposal. However, some children may not speak much until the age of three.

Speech and language are the terms which are often confused but there exists distinction between these meanings.speech-problems

Speech means verbal expression of language that includes articulation, the way words are formed.

The term language is much broader and concerns to the whole system of expressing and getting information in a meaningful way. It is the process of understanding and being understood through communication (verbal and nonverbal).

Even though problems that occur in language and speech differ, they frequently overlap. The child with a problem concerning language may pronounce words well but be unable to put more than a few words together. Speech of another child may be difficult for understanding, but this child may use words and phrases to express thoughts.
