Chemistry

Chemistry
studying_chemistryChemistry is the study of materials and how they interact.
•  Examine the way all matter changes state. Matters have three states such as solid, liquid or gas. Each state has its temperature. Make ice lollies to watch water becoming ice at 0°C, then observe them melt (or you can have them melting in the mouth!) as the ice becomes water. Pour cold water into a pan and add a light lid. Observe it boil at 100°C: the lid will lift, as the water molecules move faster and randomly when they become steam.
•  The best ways to demonstrate how chemical changes occur in particular conditions, which can't be reversed, are boiling an egg, making yoghurt and watching dough rise.
•  It is a good idea to try some chemical reactions. Put four pots, each with a white powder: flour, salt, bicarbonate of soda and sugar. Mix these with different liquids - try water, then vinegar for some more dramatic results and observe the results. Get your older children explain what happens and why. (If they need your help, remind them that vinegar is an acid!).
